How to Eat Healthy While Traveling for a Conference

For myself, I go beyond this, but I spend a lot of time in my pickup travelling to small towns around Florida. I have a powered cooler in my pickup to make sure I always have cold water and healthy options available at all times, and I installed a second battery with an isolator connected to a jackery power box to make sure it always has power. I have a coffee maker for 1 cup that runs off the cigarette lighter, a blendjet for shakes in a pinch, and always packs of sardines, tuna and salmon. I also have a small portable grill I can put on the tailgate so I can always have fresh protein when I get to the hotel or office.

Conference Travel Tips

Traveling for a conference can be exciting, but it also presents challenges when trying to stick to your healthy eating habits. With a little planning and some smart choices, you can stay on track and nourish your body even when you’re away from home. Here’s how to do it:

1. Plan Ahead

Before you head to the conference, take some time to plan your meals and snacks. Research nearby restaurants or grocery stores that offer healthy options. If your hotel room has a mini-fridge, consider stocking up on essentials like string cheese, hard-boiled eggs, cottage cheese, or yogurt. Skip the hotel breakfast if you can, especially the free ones, and have your own supply in the room.

2. Pack Snacks

Bring along your own snacks to avoid relying on vending machines or conference food that might not meet your dietary needs. Some great travel-friendly options include:

  • Beef jerky (made with clean ingredients)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Small packs of cheese
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Meat sticks

3. Stay Hydrated

It’s easy to forget to drink water when you’re busy, but staying hydrated is key to maintaining your energy levels and focus. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and refill it throughout the day. If you prefer something with a bit more flavor, consider bringing electrolyte packets to add to your water, or do what we prefer which is add some lemon or lime and a dash of salt.

4. Be Mindful at Meals

When dining out, opt for meals that prioritize protein and healthy fats. Look for dishes that include grilled meats, fish, or eggs, and pair them with low-carb vegetables, no starches. If you’re at a buffet or a catered event, fill your plate with these items first to avoid overeating on less healthy options.

  • Breakfast: Choose eggs, bacon, or sausage over pastries and cereals.
  • Lunch/Dinner: Go for grilled or baked meats, and steamed vegetables. Avoid fried foods and sugary sauces.
  • Snack: Reach for nuts, cheese, or jerky if you need a midday boost.

5. Use Grocery Delivery Services

If your conference is in a city with grocery delivery services, consider placing an order for fresh, healthy foods to be delivered to your hotel. This way, you’ll have easy access to nutritious snacks and meals without having to rely on restaurant food.

6. Stay Active

While food is important, don’t forget to keep moving. Many hotels have fitness centers, or you can go for a walk or do a quick bodyweight workout in your room. Staying active will help you feel better and stay focused during your conference sessions.

7. Be Kind to Yourself

Traveling can be stressful, and it’s okay if you don’t eat perfectly while you’re away. Do your best to make healthy choices, but don’t beat yourself up if you indulge a little. The goal is to stay balanced and enjoy the experience without compromising your health. And avoid sugar at all costs!

Final Thoughts

Eating healthy while traveling for a conference is all about preparation and making mindful choices. By planning ahead, packing snacks, and staying hydrated, you can keep your nutrition on track and feel your best, no matter where your travels take you.

Safe travels and stay healthy!
